Tetris — Review: More Interesting Than I Was Expecting
by KJ Proulx
From The Social Network to Moneyball, I’ve always loved watching well-made behind-the-scenes stories. Sure, everyone knows Facebook, but the backstory is fascinating. Sure, everyone knows (at least somewhat) how Baseball is played, but the inner workings are riveting in a film like Moneyball. I’ll always check out true stories in this style and I’m pleased to say that Apple TV+’s latest release in Tetris was yet another that I really liked. I’ve only ever played the game, but I had no clue about everything that was involved in bringing the game to the public.
The film begins with Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) discovering the game of Tetris. Without it having any current distribution and the waters being incredibly muddy as to if anyone has the rights, he risks his life and travels to Moscow, where he faces the Soviet Union. Just for wanting to become rich for discovering this game, he could literally end up dead if he isn’t careful. I didn’t expect this film to be as serious as it was, but the transitions and certain moments of humour elevated it for me. I found myself very entertained with this one.
I’ve been a fan of Taron Egerton since he burst onto the scene with both Kingsman: The Secret Service and Eddie the Eagle. He has proven himself to be a terrific actor time and time again…
