Nyad — Review: A True Story Worth Telling
by KJ Proulx
The story of Diana Nyad is one that I feel I should have known about in the past. It seems that it was very public knowledge, but this story must have slipped past me. I’m kind of thankful that it did though because that ended up putting me on the edge of my seat. This is a great character study and the two co-leads often steal the scenery from each other. Here’s why I recommend checking out Nyad.
Growing up as a swimmer with many dreams of long-distance swimming, Diana Nyad (Annette Benning) decides at the age of 60 that she’s not ready to give up. After not having swam in over 30 years, she chooses to train and push herself to swim 103 miles from Cuba to the Florida Keys. Her lifelong best friend Bonnie (Jodie Foster) is always by her side and supporting her, but thinks she is crazy for this particular choice. The dynamic between the two of them makes for a much more enjoyable film as well. It’s a simple story about a woman who wants to try once again to accomplish her dream, but the chemistry between the two co-leads makes this story sing.
Jodie Foster doesn’t act as much as she used to, but it’s always nice to see when she does. This is one of her best performances in years and she absolutely sold her friendship with Annette Benning. I believed these two were lifelong friends. I’m mentioning Jodie Foster…
