Mainstream comedies (especially in theatres) have become nearly non-existent in the last five to ten years. I feel like audiences are lucky to get one or two good ones in an entire year these days. When I heard the positive buzz about Joy Ride, I got excited that there may just be a great one on the way. Well, I’m glad I listened to that buzz because this is a great comedy. That alone is enough for me, but with the addition of a new emotional core to the story, this is easily one of the better comedies I’ve seen in a few years.

Joy Ride follows Audrey (Ashley Park) and her childhood friend Lolo (Sherry Cola) as they venture out on a trip for a business meeting. Joined by Deadeye (Sabrina Wu) and Kat (Stephanie Hsu), the four of them end up on a wild adventure involving sex, drugs, and ridiculous situations. At the heart of the film though is the fact that Audrey was adopted at a very early age by a white couple in America and she may just get the chance to meet her birth mother along this wild ride. I was tearing up by the time the film was wrapping up, but the humour here is why viewers may love it as I did.

As I said, sex and drugs are a huge player here when it comes to the humour, so if that’s not something you find all that funny, this film won’t be for you. For myself, I thought the…
